Hive Hits Topping Off Construction Milestone

The Hive’s design and construction teams had reason to celebrate on September 21st, as the building was topped off at its 10th floor.

The construction management team at Catapulta Contracting, along with the JEMM team, hosted over 100 tradespeople and project supporters to mark the milestone and take in the amazing city views from the building’s rooftop.

“Getting to this stage of construction safely and on time is a big achievement for any project and we’re appreciative of the team that’s here on site at the Hive,” said Lesleigh Russell, Principal & Director of Construction for JEMM Properties.

In the next few weeks, the crane will be removed from site and the team will work to enclose the building.

When complete, Hive in Sunnyside will offer 140 purpose-built rental units along 9A street just steps from the Bow River and nearby LRT station.

Hive’s first residents are expected to arrive in the summer of 2024.

Spring Brings Construction Progress at Hive

How is construction progressing?

What a great spring! Concrete is progressing well and should see some big movement upward in the next two months and up to Level 6 by the end of July.

What are the working hours?

A typical workday remains from 7AM to 5:30PM, though some days work could extend to 8:00PM or later depending on how the concrete pour days play out.

Is there going to be a lot of noise and dust?

As with any construction project, there will be some loud banging and some noise associated with our equipment and the delivery and pouring of concrete and other heavy materials.  On windy days, our Construction Manager will try to modify work whenever possible to minimize blowing dust but now that we are out of the ground, dust will be reduced.

Who is the contact person for questions or concerns about construction at Hive?

We understand that the construction process can feel disruptive for people living nearby the site.  Anyone with questions or concerns about how work is progressing at Bridge is encouraged to reach out to us by filling out an online form at jemm.ca/the-hive-in-sunnyside.

Wishing Well Unveiled at Bridge at Bridgeland

JEMM Properties, the City of Calgary and Bridgeland Riverside Community Association members met at Bridge at Bridgeland to unveil Wishing Well, a multi-sensory and interactive public art piece.

Originally located at the Genesis Centre, Wishing Well was moved into storage following concerns with sunlight reflecting from its interior surface.  After undergoing specialized engineering studies based on its new location and the addition of a non-reflective coating, the sculpture has been deemed safe and is now ready to fulfil its intent as a dynamic addition to Calgary’s art scene.

Wishing Well is now in its new home, located at Bridge in a plaza facing Murdoch Park at the busy corner of 9th Street and McDougall Road N.E. This gathering space is specifically designed for pedestrian activity and is an easily accessible location for visitors to interact with Wishing Well.

“This has been a genuine collaboration with The City and the community and together we found an achievable way to get this spectacular sculpture out of storage.” said Edan Lindenbach, Principal of Land Planning & Development for JEMM. “We’re pleased to have been part of the re-homing strategy for Wishing Well and love what it brings to the tenants at Bridge and this amazing community.”

Wishing Well was created by renowned artists from Living Lenses [link to https://www.livinglenses.com/] of San Francisco.  The sculpture evokes a shell splitting open to reveal a seed. It is made of stainless steel and weighs 2200 kilograms. Standing 3.88 metres tall, 5.36 metres wide and 4 metres deep it provides a landmark art piece within the community. Visitors can freely interact with Wishing Well by walking through it and around it, as well as by texting a wish to the sculpture to experience digital light and sound from within the sculpture.

JEMM Welcomes Wishing Well to Bridgeland

JEMM Properties has partnered with the City of Calgary to bring Wishing Well, a multi-sensory and interactive public art piece, to the community of Bridgeland.

Originally located at the Genesis Centre, Wishing Well was moved into storage following concerns with sunlight reflecting from its interior surface.  After undergoing specialized engineering studies based on its new location and the addition of a non-reflective coating, the sculpture has been deemed safe and is now ready to fulfill its intent as a dynamic addition to Calgary’s art scene.

In June of 2022, Wishing Well will move from storage to be installed at Bridge, a 285-unit mixed-use residential rental building developed by JEMM Properties. The sculpture will be installed within a plaza facing Murdoch Park, at the busy corner of 9th Street and McDougall Road N.E.

“There were open minds all around the table during our discussions with The City and that positivity got us to an exciting re-homing strategy that will see Wishing Well enjoyed by Calgarians. It’s kind of a come-back story -- a win for the environment and a win for the community in getting people engaged with a landmark art piece. We’re pleased to have lent a hand by providing a safe and suitable location.”

The Bridgeland-Riverside Community Association was an enthusiastic supporter of bringing Wishing Well to its new location at Bridge.

“This brings a vibrant and interactive public art piece to Bridgeland alongside a beautiful building that will house more new neighbors and amenities,” said Ali McMillan, former Planning Director for the Bridgeland-Riverside Community Association. “It is wonderful to work with partners who are such an active part of the communities they are building.”

“I am so pleased with the collaboration between government and private industry for a creative solution that benefits The City, JEMM Properties, and Calgarians.” added Ward 9 Councillor Gian-Carlo Carra. “Very pleased to be keeping this important public art piece in NE Calgary and ensuring a rad home in a rad Ward 9 neighborhood.”
